final year design portfolio

At the completion of the final year of study at Edinburgh College of Art, a varied portfolio has been generated. It has been the aim to prove that we as landscape architects are able to work on several scales, from the small to the very large.

As a consequence, projects have ranged in size from the smallest garden, as represented by the Chaumont-sur-Loire one week sketch design.

The other extreme is represented by the regional regeneration project we were working on. We were asked to come up with proposals for the town of Peterhead, located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Peterhead, having grown over the past 20 years to become the largest white-fish port in Europe, has been hit hard by the decline in fish stocks and subsequent cut in quotas. We, as landscape architects, were invited to come up with projects that might be used to regenerate the town and surrounding countryside.

The final project worked on during this year was on a site selected by each student. My project was centered on an industrial area adjacent to one of the city of Bergen's cemeteries. The proposal calls for cessation of the industrial activity on the neighbouring site, and converting this into a new cemetery for the 20th century. The new extension will be contrasting the existing one, but will still be complementing and in close dialogue with it.

The flash-animation above shows how the urban form of the city of Bergen have been altered over the past century. It was prepared as part of the site analysis for the cemetery extension at Møllendal, Bergen, which is located in the lower right-hand corner of the map.
